The tiny Maldivian coral island of Guhli is home to an interesting trial desalination unit that uses the waste heat of the local power generator to produce up to 10t of potable water a day through a membrane process. On Guhli, which measures just 600m by 300m, there are around 1200 inhabitants, a shipyard and a growing number of guesthouses. The only source of potable water is seasonal rain, so the island is very reliant on water imports. The local power company, STELCO, developed the trial project in joint venture with the Aquiva Foundation, which won a 2013 tender to desalinate water using the waste heat from all the Maldivian islands.
