Global growth of desalination

Desalination has a long history of adoption in areas where drought and water shortages have made it an inevitable option, such as the Middle East and on islands in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, but is drought in other areas now extending the technology's reach? The answer would appear to be a qualified 'yes' (see boxes). In the US in particular, the long drought in Texas has led the state to set up a committee headed by Representative Todd Hunter to study the potential for desalinating water from the Gulf of Mexico.
