Research reduces corrosion, chemical use and cleaning

Drintec, the commercial brand of the non-profit Canary Islands Water Center, is involved in a number of long-term R&D projects, including one to find ways of reducing corrosion in desalination systems. Dr Manuel Hernandez notes that 'corrosion is a major problem as desalinated water is very corrosive, so we need to take care of this by remineralising to the correct pH'. He adds that corrosion means some pipes last just five or six years, and other problems such as breakdowns also occur. Dr Hernandez says: 'Drintec remineralises very effectively and cheaply. We are now doing research on CO2 dissolution.' The Water Center has also helped to design a new, high-efficiency system to dissolve CO2, he explains.
