The intended theme for this month's column was to be about horizontal wells and the pos-sible future use of this emerging technology. That was until I received e-mails from a few faithful readers about recent columns. In the first e-mail, which I will say came from "Joe Driller," there was appreciation for Water Well Journal, and in particular for a column I wrote in February about diversity in the water well industry. He added that perhaps I pen a future column on ways to convince those of us in the business how "not to work so hard." Faithful reader No. 2, let's call him "Pete Pumpman," asked me to write a column on what I thought was important about our profession. Both of these comments got me to thinking — what profession works harder or is more important than the water well business? Based on observations from my limited 47-year time span on this planet, I would submit not many. OK, we all know how hard most of us in the business work, but the real question we should ask ourselves is this: We may get out of bed and go to work every day, but do we really do anything important? Here's my perspective on this question.
