Although the majority of vertical turbine and submersible pumps are used for deep well applications, they can also be used and are often preferred as booster pumps for many applications including parallel and series service as outlined in the last two columns of The Water Works. This month, we'll examine this specific use along with the related design process and pitfalls for open sumps, that is, sumps open and exposed to atmospheric pressure.
