Groups in Maine recently gathered signatures for a proposed state referendum that would have put a 20 cents-per-gallon state tax on groundwater withdrawals by large water bottlers. Although at press time the Maine secretary of state had ruled that the number of valid signatures required for the referendum fell slightly short, tax advocates vowed to continue to press their proposal in the state legislature. Jane Lazgin, director of corporate communications for Nestle Waters North America, sat down with Water Technology to discuss the impact such taxes could have on bottlers like Poland Spring, a unit of Nestle, and what they could mean for the entire bottled water industry.
