This study compared fluoresence generated by hydrolysis of 4-methylumbeliferyl-beta-D-galactos to thermotolerant and total coliform populations in raw water from environmental sources around Oslo, Notway. Detection times ranged from ≤1 hr with >1,000 cfu to generally under 8 hr for 1 thermotolerant coliform and 9.5 - 13 hr for 1 coliform. Semi-quantification was possible with known test matrices. Samples were confirmed with traditional coliform confirmation methods. Another application is an on-line, auto-sampling/auto-reporting instrument for routine raw water surveillence before drinking water production. A predictive model estimated thermotolerant coliform populations enabling operational decisions within 4 hours regarding sub-standard water quality
