INTRODUCTION: MULTIPURPOSE WATER RESOURCE PLANNING AND DESIGN

The purpose of this issue is to demonstrate that successful water resource projects are those which are multipurpose and multiobjective in nature, and which involve diverse interest groups and professionals. Public benefits can be substantial when this philosophy is adopted. Conroy et al, describe an approach to a problem that has stopped reclaimed water projects from moving forward in arid climates: reclaimed water supply is greatest in the winter while demand is greatest in the summer. The Agua Fria Linear Recharge Project involving the cities of Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe, Arizona, will not only bring reclaimed water quality up to aquifer level standards, but it will also improve the river habitat and provide recreational and educational opportunities for surrounding communities.
