IMPACTS OF BURIED PIPELINES OIN WATER RESOURCES

More than 60 countries each have over 2,000 km of pipelines (Goodland, 2005). The United States (U.S.) has the most, with nearly 800,000 km. Tens of thousand more kilometers of pipeline are being planned, most in developing countries, and they are some of the biggest infrastructure projects in those areas. Natural gas and oil are commonly transported pipelines. Pipelines also carry biofuels, sewage, slurry, water, and other liquids and gases. The potential impacts of pipelines on water and environmental resources are variable (Figures 1 and 2) and depend on many factors: project design, the scale of the project, location, the material being transported, best management practices used during construction, speed of construction, route selection, and more. A broad overview of these various potential impacts and strategies for their abatement are presented in this article.
