PRODUCING ALGAE-BASED BIOFUELS FROM WASTEWATER

Biofuels offer a supplement or an alternative to fossil-based fuels. Most of us are familiar with ethanol, which is an alcohol-based fuel that results from the fermentation of sugars or starches or cellulose. Feedstocks can include wheat, corn, sugar beets, and sugar cane, among other sources. Diesel biofuel is produced from oil. Feedstocks can include animal fats, vegetable oils, soy, rapeseed, jatropha, and palm oil, among other sources. There are clear policy advantages to biofuels, such as reducing American reliance on foreign sources of oil, reduction in harmful emissions, and production through use of renewable resources.
