Use of a Biofilter for Treatment of Heavy Metals in Highway Runoff

Effective treatment of stormwater by laboratory-scale biofilters has demonstrated that these simple filters may be used to remove dissolved metals and sediment-adsorbed metals found in stormwater runoff. Laboratory testing indicated that even biofilm just 3 days old provided suspended solids and heavy metals removals in excess of 90/100 of total Cu and Zn. Fieldscale testing is recommended.
