Industry Vows To Fight EPA's Proposed Preemptive Veto Of Pebble Mine

Industry is vowing to fight EPA's recently proposed preemptive veto of disposal sites for the planned Pebble Mine, arguing that any veto based on the agency's disputed study of the mine would be unlawful, while acknowledging that if the proposal stands it still leaves the door open to a mine with lesser impacts than is currently under consideration. "[W]e are pleased to note the agency has rejected requests to preemptively veto the Pebble Project in favor of imposing specific conditions on future development. That said, we believe that EPA does note have the statutory authority to impose conditions on development at Pebble, or any development project anywhere in Alaska or the US, prior to the submission of a detailed development plan" and will continue to litigate the issue, says a July 18 statement by the Pebble Limited Partnership (PLP), which is developing the proposed mine.
