Environmentalists are stepping up pressure pn Great Lakes governors to follow through with plans to reduce nutrient pollution in Lake Erie that could cause a reprisal of a 2014 harmful algal bloom (HAB) outbreak that temporarily cut off water supplies for Toledo, OH, residents, even as a new federal law requires EPA to develop a strategic plan for assessing and managing the risks of such outbreaks. But any state, regional or federal action as a result of these efforts will come too late to address HABs, and the cyanotoxins they produce, that may emerge in the coming weeks, sources say.
