摘要

New Jersey drinking water advisors are proposing the state establish the nation's strictest drinking water limit for the emerging contaminant 1,4-dioxane, following in the footsteps of New York's first-in-the-nation standard and after EPA pushed off a decision to regulate the ubiquitous chemical until further data comes in. New Jersey's Drinking Water Quality Institute (DWQI), which consists of state experts who advise the state's Department of Environmen-tal Protection (NJDEP) on drinking water standards, late last month proposed NJDEP adopt a health-based maximum contaminant level (MCL) for 1,4-dioxane in drinking water of 0.33 parts per billion (ppb). The level would be slightly stricter than New York's 1 ppb standard.
