Heavy Rain and Flash Floods: Implementation Aspects in the Practical Design Process

Flash Floods from heavy rains have caused floodings with severe damages in the last years in urban areas. The DWA-BWK guideline for practical precaution measures demonstrates explains a practical approach how damages in municipalities can be prohibited or at least minimized. Therefore the process has to be understood as a municipal common task. All stakeholders in the design process must work together, the sanitary environmental engineering discipline is only one among many other players. In this paper the importance of roads as discharge and retention elements during heavy rains and the role of the municipal planning is described by means of best practice examples.
