Local Flood and Soil Protection Based on Little Detention Ponds Integrated into the Agricultural Management

To prevent sediment input and flood damages from a small arable land of the Ketzerbach-catchment in Saxony (Germany) two little detention ponds (impoundment volume: 700 m(3)) were installed in this area. The little detention ponds are completely involved into the agricultural management. This local measure works without loss of arable land and needs low upkeep. In order to quantify these effects, the application of models is absolutely necessary. By using the physically based simulation model EROSION-3D the potential of water retention and reducing soil erosion of the detention ponds in combination with different tillage practices were calculated.
