Hydropower plant Altheim (Isar) - Dredging works in Landshut

Sedimentation of reservoirs is a well-known and often expensive, natural phenomenon for operators of hydropower plants. Particular fine sediments cause trouble due to high cost for dredging, drainage and disposal. In first instance things appear much easier dealing with coarse bed load at the initial point of backwater. However, the following case study of dredging works performed in the river Isar near Landshut (Bavaria) illustrates that even these apparently simple civil works bear risks, requiring object-related dedicated geotechnical investigations, design, and flexible reaction on developments not foreseen.
