Flood protection within the Altmuhl valley has been a concern of the local population since the 1920's. The industrial development of Franconia intensified water shortages in north Bavaria. The combined undertakings of three large hydraulic engineering projects - the flood protection of the AltmOhl valley, the increase of the minimum discharges in the Regnitz and Main rivers and the construction of a canal from the Main to the Danube - enabled the construction of five dams and consequently the new Franconian lakes, inaugurated in 1990. The landscape in west central Franconia has been regenerated for the people and the environment in harmony with nature, agriculture and technology.
