At the end of coal mining activities in the Ruhr area, the consequences of centuries of underground mining do not end at once. A reservoir is given for example, which was installed for regulation of run-off under subsidence conditions caused by coal mining. The reservoir exemplifies the impact of mining combined with the tasks of flood protection in this German metropolis region. Nowadays, the reservoir regulates the post mining water management. Therefore, the high water outlet sluice is recently reconstructed. The report shows the planning between the priorities of stress to the building stock caused by mining, the recent management of flood risks as well as the aspects of permission under law and ecology.
