In his review of Martin Melosi's book 'Precious commodity', recently published in this journal, Maurits Ertsen stated frankly that 'those studying histories of water know that the combination of water, human actions, and their environments becomes messy very quickly; water history needs to deal with and show this messiness.' Water history becomes by no means simpler when it narrows its focus down to cities and rivers.
