Chlorine Gas: a Restricted-Use Pesticide?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed to re-classify chlorine gas used in drinking water and wastewater treatment as a restricted-use pesticide under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA; 65 FR 56305, Sept. 18). The new classification of chlorine gas will require anyone using chlorine gas at these facilities to be trained and certified as pesticide applicators by state pesticide programs, or to be supervised by someone who is certified.
