Belt Filter Press and Centrifuge Basics

The belt press is the most widely used type of dewatering equipment, with more than 7000 presses installed and running in the United States. The typical belt press has polymer-treated solids dumped onto its gravity section. The gravity section uses some type of plow to furrow the solids back and forth to move each portion of the solids to the belt to release; its water. The thickened solids, generally now 5% to 10% cake, then drop into the wedge section of the press, where the two pressure belts squeeze the solids. The two belts with the solids between them wind around a series of rollers with decreasing diameters. The decreasing diameters pull the belt tighter, increasing the pressure on the solids. After the final roller, the belts separate, and scrapers shear off the dewatered solids.
