Bioenergy and Biofuel Production from Wastes/Residues of Emerging Biofuel Industries

The continuous increase in energy demand coupled with rising oil prices in recent years has started to impact the economy of many developing countries. It is now apparent that we must explore every opportunity to generate renewable energy from locally available low-cost feedstocks. This review looks at the potential of bioenergy and biofuel production from residues and wastes of biofuel industries. Such industries generate significant amounts of low-solids liquid streams: stillage, vinasse and glycerin, which can be converted to bioenergy through anaerobic digestion for in-plant use. DDG, corn fiber and bagasse are other high solids lignocellulosic residues of biofuel industries that can be effectively converted into ethanol and butanol.
