Composition of municipal solid waste and per- spective of decentralized composting in the dis- tricts of Lome, Togo

Togo has a surface area of 330 km2 and a population of almost one million inhabitants (2008 census). The nation, similar to many African countries, is lacking in many basic services and household waste management strategies are inadequate. Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) is currently a high-priority issue, with strategies being applied in an attempt to promote a decrease in residential waste, treatment and recycling. Contrary to other developing countries, no housing and urban development policies have been implemented in Togo, thus resulting in a mix of high and low income housing.
