摘要

Until 1999, grate firing incineration was the most widely-used waste incineration technology in Japan. In January 2000, however, a strict new law, the "Act on Special Measures against Dioxins", was enacted, aiming at a drastic reduction of dioxins emission. The newly-developed gasifying and melting technology was introduced to cope with the dioxins emission problem and recycling of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) residues, which is also an issue due to the extremely limited landfill space in Japan. Over 100 gasifying and melting plants are currently in operation in Japan, while it is still considered an unproven or unknown technology, especially in Europe.
