Robert B. Dean, founding editor of Waste Management and Research (WMR), died in Copenhagen, Denmark early on Sunday 30 December 2007, at the age of 94, following a brief illness. Dr Dean was available in Copenhagen in 1981 when the International Solid Waste association (ISWA) started thinking about the publication of a real journal, and he agreed to take on the task of editor-in-chief of WMR from its start in 1983 until he changed to become associate editor in 1990. WMR, being the scientific flagship of ISWA, Dr Dean did a tremendous job for the Association and really helped accomplish the intended task: bridging the gap between science and practice by letting both theory and experience be the stepping stones in the solid waste management development process.
