摘要

Over the past few decades the concepts of 'integrated waste management' and the waste hierarchy's inverted pyramid have evolved in parallel with the emergence of 'sustainable development' as guiding principles for organizations responsible for providing municipal solid waste management services. In the face of increasing urbanization, associated higher rates of waste generation, rising labour and fuel prices, and vocal objections to the siting of new transfer stations and landfills, municipal officials have been wise to seek ways to reduce the volume of waste requiring collection and/or disposal on land. Thesernefforts have led in success stories in many parts of the world.
