Appendix Ⅲ Russian Missile Designations

The following list of naval missiles and launchers provides an up-do-date directory of the current Russian designations for these weapons. We stress that these are naval designations only; the same missiles used by the Army or Air Force often have entirely different nomenclature. Russian naval weapons have an individual number and name for the weapon, and for the weapons system complex (missile or gun, launcher or mounting, and the fire control radar). Note that these codes are not centrally issued and are not systematic, although a loose structure of sorts does seem to apply. Each component also has a Russian industry production code. Although these are centrally assigned, the armed services all appear to use different nomenclature systems and also have a tendency to apply those systems without proper discipline. As a result, there are many inconsistencies. The RSM codes used for strategic weapons were devised specifically for the SALT/START/CFE treaties to distinguish them from tactical and operational weapons.
