Navies from 38 countries around the globe operate more than 500 submarines. China, North Korea, Russia and Iran have 40 percent of those submarines, so the threat of submarines remains a significant concern to the US and its allies and partners. As the US Navy grows the size and capability of its fleet, attack submarines (SSNs) are at the tip of the spear. The US continues to operate about half of its 62 Los Angeles-class SSNs, commissioned between 1976 and 1996, as well as three Seawolf-class SSNs, which were designed for a Cold War threat of Soviet submarines.
