THE SOKOL CLASS TORPEDO BOATS IN FINNISH SERVICE

The British Yarrow shipyard completed a torpedo boat named Sokol for the Imperial Russian Navy in 1896. This ship type originally was termed a "Torpedo Boat Destroyer". Using this prototype as a model, domestic Russian shipyards built 26 more ships of this kind. The first two were ordered from Crichton Co. shipyard in Turku, Finland (then a grand dutchy in the Russian Empire). The original British prototype had coal-fired boilers, but the Russian Navy wanted that the boilers that also could use liquid fuel. The shipyard officials suspected, however, that the longitudinal bunkers at the sides might leak due to the hull vibrations. As a solution, three additional liquid fuel tanks were added in front of the forward boiler room, between the boiler rooms, and behind the after boiler room.
