Note by translator: The first portion of the article (pp. 14-17) describes the design history of the Graf Zeppelin and her career in the German Navy; amply covered in Dr. Peter Schenk's article, "German Aircraft Carrier Developments," and has not been translated. By April 1945 the condition of the carrier [i.e., Graf Zeppelin] was as follows: There was no artillery armament aboard, the installation of fire-control gear was unfinished; the electrical systems were only partially installed, as was also the case with the special aviation-technical equipment. Naturally, there were no aircraft aboard the ship. However, the Graf Zeppelin had received her complete machinery plant and the on-board electrical generators were working - an enemy would not have been presented with any special difficulties in quickly converting her into a warship.
