One of the four separate actions that made up the Battle for Leyte Gulf, the Battle of Surigao Strait deserves to be remembered. Counting the number of capital ships present it was the biggest straight gun action of the ten such battles between capital ships that were fought in World War II, and the very last such battle in naval history. However, the remarkable action between the American escort carriers, destroyers, and destroyer escorts of Taffy Three and the Japanese Navy's Center Force of battleships, cruisers, and destroyers the following day has tended to put Surigao Strait in the shade.
