Spithead Cavalcade: Some Celebrated Portsmouth-Built Warships, 1850-1920

Portsmouth Dockyard built around 300 warships over 500 years, using wood for hull construction until 1860, then iron for about 20 years, then steel. The first named ship recorded was the king's ship Sweepstake of 1497, the last the general-purpose frigate Andromeda, completed in 1969; outside the dockyard, warship construction in Vosper Thomycroft's former facility, now part of BAE Systems Surface Ships, continued almost to the present.
