A system of deposits for certain beverages sold in single-use containers was introduced in Germany on 1 January 2003. The move aims to increase the falling market share of refillable drinks containers. Protests and legal action by opponents of the plans have been unable to prevent the deposits, but a uniform system for administration will not be introduced until October.
