Britain's historic Imperial War Museum found itself without one of the most famous aircraft to have operated from the island notion during World War Two - the P-51 Mustang. The Commonwealth nation of Canada came to the IWM's aid. On 6 December 1950, the Royal Canadian Air Force took on charge P-51 D-25-NA USAAF s 44-73979 and it became RCAF 9246. It was briefly in service with 416 Squodron but was grounded in mid-1951 after an unspecified accident. It then became an instructional airframe with the serial A-612 and was then shuttled around between several bases, eventually becoming a gate guard at RCAF St. Jean, Quebec.
