When the subject of what was the most important American WWII naval fighter comes up, the first aircraft that comes to mind is the elegant but brutal Chance Vought F4U Corsair. With its inverted gull wing, massive P&W R-2800, and impressive combat record, the Corsair would certainly seem to be the logical holder of that important title. However, in reality, the honor would not go to the Corsair - it would go to a more mundane design from the Grumman Iron Works.
