When it comes to Linux, no one sings its praises like Josh Levine, CIO at E*Trade Financial. That's because Levine made a big bet on Linux in the early part of 2002, migrating E*Trade from a Sun UNIX platform to IBM Intel servers running Linux. He followed that in the spring of 2003 by deploying clustering software from IBM. The software allows E*Trade to build a high-performance database and business-intelligence system that leverages the low cost of Linux and spreads work across a series of interconnected servers. It also allows computing tasks to be completed more reliably. The information in the database will be used to help cross sell services and products across the financial-services provider, but it's really about leveraging Linux to improve customer service, Levine says.
