Arecent executive shuffle at Vanguard suggests two intriguing ideas about financial services IT leadership: One, a CIO should focus on running the company first, and on running IT second. And two, swapping CIOs - or executives in any positions - can be a virtue in itself, because the change brings in new ideas and thinking. These surely are oversimplifications. But the elevation of Vanguard's Paul Heller and John Marcante - Marcante steps up into the chief information officer role, and Heller moves from CIO to head of the retail investor group - as part of the mutual fund company's reorganization points to some innovative thinking regarding the CIO role that some IT pros aren't going to like.
