Van Chan is a mountainous district of Yen Bai Province, 81 km southwest of the provincial centre. The average altitude of the district is 256 m. Van Chan has 31 communes and 3 towns. The annual average temperature is 21-240C and the yearly rainfall is 1,200-1,500 mm. The district has an area of 122,392 ha, including 12, 812 ha of agricultural land, 31,572 ha of forestland, 1,955 ha for special purposes, 992 ha of residential land, and 75,065 ha of unused land.
