Vietnam Targets Gdp Growth Of 7.5 Per Cent In First Quarter Of 2006

The Government of Vietnam targets gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 7.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2006, according to the year-end cabinet meeting in Ho Chi Minh City on December 27. The high goal was set as the country saw strong economic growth in the last five years and expects to see the same growth rate in the next five years. Accordingly, industrial production is projected to increase by 15 per cent, retail sales of goods and services 19 per cent, export value to reach US$9 billion, total social investment to account for 37.5 per cent of GDP, and the consumer price index to hover at 3.5 per cent. To reach the targets, the Prime Minister asked cabinet members to focus on development investment, the fight against corruption in infrastructure construction projects and administrative reform. The Government plans to further facilitate economic development and boost exports while ensuring a stable domestic market price.
