Retro-Futuristic Vertical Lift: Examining the US Army's 1969 Cyclogiro Transport Concept

In 1967, the US Army Aviation Material Laboratories (AAVLABS) commissioned the Washington, DC-based Aerophysics Company to research and evaluate non-traditional, high-subsonic vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) transport designs. For this assignment, there was no desire to re-invent the wheel; if promising historical concepts had never been realized due to the technological limitations of the time, then why not exploit that research and modernize it? And so, two years and 1,200 references later, the Aerophysics researchers presented their findings on what they estimated to be one of several promising solutions: the cyclogiro.
