When intel corp. introduced the Atom processor last year, the chip's primary function was for implementation into what the company called MIDs, or Mobile Internet Devices, such as GPS navigation systems and other devices where always-connected Internet would be beneficial. Although not a specific target for this generation of the CPU, Intel expected some spillover into the vertical market of specific handheld productivity, and a new category of portable computers called netbooks was created.
