Operating license issued for Ostrovets 1 in Belarus

Rosatom reported October 26 that the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus, based on the conclusion of the country’s nuclear regulator Gosatomnadzor, issued a positive decision to amend the operating licenses to allow power startup operations of Unit 1 at the Ostrovets nuclear power plant in Belarus. Issuance of the operating license allows operators of Ostrovets 1 to commence power startup and power ascension testing from 1% to 50% of capacity.Rosatom said current plans indicate that Ostrovets 1 VVER-1200 will achieve power startup in early December 2020. Ostrovets 1 is expected to begin commercial operation in early 2021, followed by Unit 2 in mid-2022.
