For most American kids and families, summer means fun outdoor activities after a cold, sedentary winter, and cycling is one of the most-popular activities nationwide. Kids riding bikes over summer break is almost as American as apple pie. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, head injuries are the most-common cause of death and serious disability in bicycle-related crashes. Even though helmets are a proven intervention that reduce the risk of bicycle-related head injuries by 80%, many American adults and children simply do not wear them. Each year, hundreds of cyclists are killed in traffic accidents, most involving serious head injuries. Moreover, 1,700,000 traumatic brain injuries occur each year, and 6,000-plus children die annually from these injuries.
