Skills for Planning Practice

Ted Kitchen is one of the outstanding British planners of his generation. For those of us who were around at the time, his battles to maintain planning standards in a highly politicised working environment are now part of planning folklore. It was therefore with some eagerness that I read his book Skills for Planning Practice, and I was not disappointed. Even where I would challenge some of his analysis, the book presents a systematic overview of the range of skills that all practising planners need at some stage in their career. The book focuses on seven main clusters of skills: technical skills; planning system and process skills; place(-making) skills; customer skills; personal skills; organisational, management and political context skills; and synoptic and integrative skills.
