Criminalising Social Policy: Anti-social Behaviour and Welfare in a De-civilised Society

In an important article published in 2006, John Rodger highlighted the theoretical potential that Norbert Elias' sociology offered to scholars examining the interface between social policy, welfare reform and the anti-social behaviour (or 'Respect') agenda in the UK and elsewhere. Elias' magisterial theory of the civilising process (2000) and his work on The Established and Outsiders (1994) in particular provide avenues for exploring and interpreting a fieldrnrecently dominated by Foucauldian analysis, or critical responses to such analysis.
