The Earthscan Reader in Rural-urban Linkages

Early development theory emphasised the spatial nature of development, creating models of dual economies, cores and peripheries, urban hierarchies, transport networks or mercantile models. As a result, development research and intervention tended to be carried out in separate urban and rural areas. A recent World Development paper set out to bring this work, at least in the case of sub-Saharan Africa, up to the 21st century by focusing on the links between industrial and agricultural labour (Tiffen, 2003).
