City rules: how regulations affect urban form

In City Rules, Talen investigates the relationship between urban codes and their effects on cities through an innovative lens, using examples from across the United States. The book is dedicated to the 'beleaguered American city planner', as Talen hopes that they can reach a form of 'good urbanism' and to modify the rules that they must actually pursue. Strongly related to the New Urbanism movement (the foreword of the book is written by one of the movement's founders, Andres Duany), Talen defines good urbanism as a compact urban form that encourages the physical quality of pedestrian spaces, along with social and economic equity and land use diversity.
