Community-Building Modern Australia is a mixture of Australian social history and architectural text. "This book draws upon social and spatial histories to explore links between building and community particularly through the middle decades of the 20th century, when architectural ideas, embodied as modernism, became entwined with ideas of progressive social welfare" (p. 3). The architectural descriptions are primarily concerned with the ordinary, kindergartens, bowling clubs and the like. Omitting major social infrastructure such as schools and hospitals was a good decision, allowing the book to successfully highlight the contribution of commonplace buildings to community identity in Australia.
