In many respects, as the author herself notes, Janet's Abu-Lughod's Race, Space arid Riots in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles is the sequel or companion piece to her previous tome titled New York, Chicago, Los Angeles: America's Global Cities. As such, this most recent offering from the eminent urban sociologist shares many strengths and weaknesses with her previous book. Like her book on America's global cities, Race, Space and Riots is densely packed with detailed historical analyses of how each city's spatial arrangements, political structures, and economic character have been transformed over time. In contrast to her previous work, Race, Space and Riots focuses primarily on the twentieth century, examining how urban transformation during that period influenced the character of race relations and the potential for civil unrest in the three cities.
